Count to 14

Offer your feedback and comments at Rogi's Kitchen Table.

Fourteen seconds. Count.

There. Another person is infected with AIDS.

Count another fourteen seconds. There. Another person is infected with AIDS.

Did you have a hard day?

I did. I'm emotionally exhausted, from telling a new friend, Stu, a little of my experience with homelessness and with losing my daughter, all the while being socially ostricized.

I'm physically exhausted from trying to do too much work outside, too fast, while the weather holds out.

I'm in a lot of pain.

But I am not an infant child, dying of AIDS, orphaned because BOTH my parents, and most of my siblings, died of AIDS, too.

I am not a raped woman in India, whose husband gave her the virus and then threw her out when she showed symptoms.

I am not dying of AIDS, alone, socially ostricised, hungry, homeless and helpless.

Count to fourteen. There. Another person is infected with AIDS. Every fourteen seconds.

Now, go here and donate one little dollar: 46664. That's Nelson Mandela's prisoner number.

You think you had a hard day?

DO IT!

Thank you,

Rogi A. Riverstone

Ferret Tarot

Offer your feedback and comments at Rogi's Kitchen Table.

Everytime I think I've seen it all, someone reminds me I haven't. http://www.tarotpassages.com/ferret.htm

"Some of the card meanings are a bit quirky. The Seven of Wands shows a self-congratulatory ferret hopping about a room decorated with balloons and a banner proclaiming "You did it!" There is only celebration in this card, with no evidence of struggle. I guess ferrets have it a bit easier than humans. My first interpretation of the Knight of Pentacles is not romantic, but the Ferret Tarot depiction clearly is. Fret not, so is the Knight of Cups, who is known for his Sir Galahad-like ways.

The art, which consists of pen and ink drawings, is inconsistent. Some of the images are quite engaging and evocative, but others are less accomplished and somewhat awkward.

Sometimes the ferrets look like some other, perhaps mythical, animal. One gets the sense that Moertl grew more proficient as an artist through the creation of this deck and most of the time, the ferrets' personalities and motivation are crystal clear, and convey the desired message effectively.

The artist has put a lot of time and energy into the presentation of this limited edition deck (of 500).
The Ferret Tarot arrives confined in a fabric bag, and the design puts one in mind of pawprints. How apropos. A signed and numbered title card is included, along with a simple, stapled, little white booklet and a one eight by eleven inch "Ferret Tarot Cheat Sheet."

The Majors aren't numbered, so you can choose whether Strength is VIII or XI. A card with three suggested spreads is also included. The cardstock could be a bit heavier--the cards aren't laminated and somewhat fragile because of that. The reversible card backs depict the ferret Fool, all energetic glee. That description fits the Ferret Tarot equally well.

Fashioned from the toys? pelts and electronics, the coat (entitled The Surrogate) provides full body vibration and is designed to be a substitute lover.

Using Elmo as a vector to channel information about contemporary American culture, the installation encompasses moods both poignant and Frankenstein weird. The narrative investigates frontier economics, the human-machine relationship, and the technologist?s power to play with life. In all seriousness, Heaton?s sense of humor prevails.

Explaining My Stuff

E-mail message
Date: Thu, Sep 11, 2003, 8:14pm
Subject: [Clf-l] My Outsider Art

Here's the blog, basically describing the masks I'm making. Outsider Art http://outsiderart.blogspot.com/

I just bought some film I will photograph them tomorrow. I'll have to take photos to Evil Wal*mart to develop, because they'll post jpegs on their web site for 30 days.

Then, I'll have someone with a computer (ANY VOLUNTEERS???) access the site and email the digital photos to me, so I can post them online.

Webtv is not compatible with Wal*Mart's web site. I KNOW I shouldn't go to W.M., but it is literally the cheapest and fastest way; I've called every digital developing place in town.

Oh, I live in Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA.

I assume I can show them to you in a couple of weeks. I'm going to make more. When you see them, I think you will agree with me that
I'm on to something with these!

If you want to know about my other arts & crafts, there's a link from my Outsider Art Blog http://outsiderart.blogspot.com/ that shows some.

I also make Cat Pillows (I'll take pictures of them, too) which I can customize to look like the customers' cats.

I sell herbs & seeds, and gourd bird houses, too (more pictures!)

I'm too tired to talk about the poverty stuff tonight. I had a hard hard painful day. I need rest, so I can finish the masks tomorrow and go sell them.

Wait 'til you SEE them! I'm SO PROUD!

A Woman's Work Is Never Done

I haven't been able to do the panky site all week! I've been REALLY hustling the masks! I thot the hippy fair was Saturday. IT's TOMORROW!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have : a black cat, green dragon/dinosaur/crocodile?, and a tiger already done. All they need is a quick spray of clear acrylic.

I have 2 with primer paint out drying right now to decorate/paint tonight: lion (with yarn mane) and an ant head with mylar eyes and wire antennae.

On the living room floor, in front of my fan, is a horse whose yarn main just got paper mached on. It'll get primed in an hour or so.

Also outside: something with big eyes. I may try to make a monkey out of it with big lips and ears.

All but the monkey should probably be ready for the fair tomorrow. BUt I've been working my ASS off!

And both Mon and yesterday, I had to run errands, so that ate up 8 hrs this week.

My house is filthy. THAT's gotta b cleaned for my interview with the Albuquerque Journal next week. (see the Daily Rogi Blog).

I'm also writing for the blogs, since that's what she wants to interview me about (she found my Hood Life blog & emailed me).

I'm in a LOT of pain, but I'm not quitting 'til it's all done.

Once the hippy fair is over, I can concentrate on Mr. Panky.

Or die!

Papier Mache Masks

papier mache masks

Group: news:alt.discuss.clubs.public.arts-lit.writing.rriverstone Date: Wed, Aug 6, 2003, 8:35am (MDT-1) From: (RogiRiverstone)

I'm making masks, for Halloween.

Take a 12 pack can box. Open at seams, flatten. Cut about a 2" strip off each of the flaps ends.

Wrap box over head. Staple one of the strips under each ear, wrapping in front of jaw.

Staple other strip around head, like a hat band. Do not staple head! LOL

It'll look like a weird foot ball helmet.
mix glue, flour and water in a bowl and whisk.

tear news print paper into 1" strips, dip in glue, "squeegie" off excess liquid between fingers. Wrap news print around mask. ONE LAYER ONLY, or it'll get too wet.

Set in sun to dry for a day.

Repeat process, but.....

Cut a rectangle of tulle netting about 4x6".
Dip in glue mix, squeeze out excess. Place over face opening, secure with strips of newsprint.

Now, I can start applying "lumps" of wadded dry newsprint, covered in strips of wet, to make lumps for ears, eyes, nostrils and other facial features.

Ears, manes, etc. need to be as far BACK on the "helmet" as possible, to act as counter weights, so mask won't slip forward and blind wearer.

Once the whole thing is dry, spray with dollar spray paint. Add details with acrylic paints, beads, seeds, yarn, sequins.....whatever.

Right now, I'm making either an alligator, an alien or a dinosaur.

Next will be a cat, followed by a unicorn, then a lion!

The wearer can see very well out of the opening, cuz it's huge. But it's the same color and follows the facial lines, so the more prominent "eyes" I'm building attract the viewer's eye. The real wearer's face is veiled and shaded by the mask!

Doesn't weigh much, gets good air circulation, almost all the materials are recycled trash that cost nothing! Actual cost of materials per mask is probably less than a dollar.

Takes about 10 mins. to apply each layer of papier mache per day.

Bet I can sell em for fifty bucks each!

They're big, bold and fabulous!
............
Re: papier mach masks

Group: alt.discuss.clubs.public.arts-lit.writing.rriverstone Date: Thu, Aug 7, 2003, 9:24am (MDT-1) From:(RogiRiverstone)

one mask is almost done being sculpted. It should be done tomorrow or the next day and ready to paint, decorate. It bears, unfortunately, a strong resemblence to Barney, the Dinosaur. Eyes, nostrils, nose ridges. Tomorrow, I add lips and teeth.

The 2nd mask just got its first sculpting: eyes, eyebrows and ears for a cat.

The 3rd just has the first coating of paper on it, to cover holes and establish basic shape. It's got a short snout, so it could b a monkey, I suppose. or an owl. or something... what else has a short snout? ummmmm...

I'm also thinking of making a fish helmet. The whole thing will be a whole fish, with the person looking out the fish's mouth and the tail at the back of the head....

They're cute, baby. I mean, I'm really proud of these puppies....
